Flannel Board Stories

I was surfing the web looking for family home evening ideas for toddlers and found a web site for making your own flannel board set. So I made me a flannel board and printed out some pictures, laminated them and glued flannel to the backs so they’d stick. Jacob loved it, but ended up pulling the flannel off the back of the pictures. So then I went in search for felt cut outs. (fyi, forevertoys.com has both bible and book of mormon story pieces) I figure for FHE I can use laminated pictures since I will be handling them mostly, but I also want some story book stories and colors and shapes sets as well that he can play with on his own and at church. (I’m planning on making a smaller board for church) Anyhoo, I looked on ebay and found these felt cut outs that I could totally make myself.

These are just a few of the sets I found. So I ordered some felt on line and will start on them when I get it.

Okay, to make a flannel board, all you need is a peice of cardboard, however big you want. Cut a piece of fannel a little bigger than the cardboard. Fold the edges over and you can either tape them with duct tape or glue them down. I hot glued it. OR you can cut a piece of fabric the same size and use spray glue to glue it and not have to worry about folding the edges over. And voiole(think little mermaide :) ) you have a flannel board.

Here’s a good website to print out pictures from. You can print them out on card stock or laminate them. If you laminate them I suggest only doing the picture side, that way the flannel or felt will stay glued better to the back. Or you can do like me and make your own felt cut outs. It’s up to you. :)

One of the things to use on the laminated figures that is harder for the children to remove is to buy the sheets of peel and stick felt – I get it here in Canada at Michaels but most craft stores or craft departments should have it. I have also used sandpaper and two way carpet tape form the hardware store and it works pretty good too – especially on large pieces. I am a home daycare provider and make a lot of felt sets to use in our circle time. To make either the peel and stick or tape stick better use a piece of sandpaper and lightly rough up using small circles the area you want to adhere the tape to. With the shine of the laminate removed things stick better.

For the scripture story sets visit the Story Time Felts website to see a complete line of felts including scripture and LDS specific stories. http://www.storytimefelts.com
I sell the felts in Canada but if you visit the website you can find a US distributor near you.
